John C. Ewers - Blackfeet Indian Tipis, Design and Legend

Condition of slipcase Near Fine, portfolio is pristine.
A portfolio of 26 silk screen prints of the the painted tipis of the
Blackfeet Indians.
During the summers of 1944-45, Olga Ross Hannon and Jessie Wilber
visited the Sun Dance encampments of the South Piegan near Browning and
at Heart Butte in Montana.
They also visited the Sun Dance encampments of the Blood Indians near
Cardston Alberta, Canada. They took color slides and made sketches of
the colorful tipi designs.
In 1975 for the Bicentennial prints were silk screened for the
portfolio. Text was written by John Ewers.
This portfolio was given to museums and libraries but none were for sale.
I have searched American Book Prices and find no record of this being
offered at auction since publication in 1976.
A truly scarce item in private hands. Price $7,500. |

With 28 numbered vignettes including 23 beautifully hand colored, 51
numbered plates of which 25 are folding and 43 hand colored, all after
Geissler mainly engraved by himself and Medland, 4 engraved maps
including 3 folding by Russel. Contemporary blindstamped calf, Vol 2 has
been professionally rebacked.

From the library of czar Alexander III of Russia with his royal seal
gold embossed on cover. Alexander III was the father of the last
emperor, czar Nicholas II. This book has the library stamp of the
Anichkov Palace in St. Petersburg. author Alexandr Semenovich Ionin,
"Through South America" volume 3 with large foldout map. Published 1893,
St. Petersburg. This is number 3 of a 4 volume work done in the years
1892-1902. Each book was a stand alone work on South America, this
volume dealing with description of travel, geography, topography, etc.
Morocco leather with all edges gilt, moire endpapers. Price $1,750.

Royal Romanov seal on front cover. Personal bookplate raised embossing
of Nicholas II on first free endpaper.
This is the monogram used by Nicholas II until 1907, when his bookplate
was redesigned.
