Kenneth Graham. THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS. London: The Folio Society, 2008.
This is the Centenary Edition of the Wind in the Willows, limited to 1000
copies signed and numbered by the illustrator, Charles van Sandwyk, on a
special etching tipped on to the limitation page. There were also 30 copies
which were hors commerce. In 2005, The Folio Society and Charles van
Sandwyk produced a new edition of the Wind in the Willows that was widely
hailed. Now, for the centenary of the original publication of Kenneth
Grahame's masterpiece, that edition has been completely revisited to produce
an altogether new book of superb quality. There are now 16 tipped-in color
plates, with gold edges and decorative gold borders, and numerous pen and
ink drawings and decorations, 40 of which are new to this edition. New
endpapers illustrating Toad Hall have been printed letterpress. The
binding is quarter vellum, stamped in 22 carat gold, with vellum tips and
paper-covered boards blocked with a design by the illustrator in three
shades of metallic foil. The book is housed in a sturdy cloth-covered
solander box with a paper label. The result is an altogether worthy
successor to the magnificent limited-edition gift books of the early 20th
century. 267 pp./Boxed. $1,900.00
