Acosta was a Portuguese Jesuit naturalist and physician who pioneered the study of plants for use in pharmacology. The moon's Acosta Crater is named in honor of his scientific expeditions and study. The last two woodcuts illustrate his treatise on the Indian elephant. Excellent condition in vellum binding.
