1st edition thus. Set # 41 of 200. Indexed. Illustrated. Small folios. Green buckram with gilt lettered and decorated spines and medallions on front covers. When published, the Thwaites edition of Lewis and Clark was the most expansive and authoritative edition. The 15 volumes are numbered by Dodd, Mead as eight, the first seven constituting text volumes numbered 1-7, each in two parts. The final volume, numbered eight, is the atlas containing 54 facsimile maps.
Very good condition with lightly bumped and rubbed edges and subtle discoloring to spines. Most gatherings are uncut. Edges of pages are gently yellowed. Offsetting to pages facing plates. Frontispiece of volume I part I is nearly detached. Front endsheet of volume VII, part II is discolored, possibly from exposure to a newspaper clipping. Very sturdy and clean.

227, 300, 276, 368 pp. 1st edition. Illustrated. 8vo. Black cloth with gilt lettered spines. Probably later-issued dust jackets. These are red and yellow, instead of metallic gold and red, and there are different ads on the rear panel of volume four. Very rare in dust jackets.
Very good. Some volumes have gently bumped corners and all volumes have light tape residue on endsheets, but all are tight, sturdy and clean with bright clear pages. Handsome set. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good with lightly chipped extremities. Volumes 1 and 4 have discoloration from adhesive of a formerly taped closed tear on bottom of back cover and volume 1 has light residue from former price sticker on bottom of back cover.
